Portland to Milwaukie Light Rail Extension

Portland, Oregon

The Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project will travel 7.3 miles, connecting Portland State University in downtown Portland, inner Southeast Portland, Milwaukie and north Clackamas County. MAX service on the alignment is scheduled to begin in 2015.

The project includes:

  • Two new stations on the west side of the Willamette River.
  • A multi-use transit bridge spanning the river from OSHU’s future South Waterfront campus to OMSI.
  • Eight new stations on the east side of the Willamette, beginning at OMSI and proceeding south through inner Southeast Portland and Milwaukie to north Clackamas County.
  • A south terminus at Oak Grove.

As a member of the LTK Systems Engineering team, Elcon is responsible for preliminary and final design of the traction power system including six 1MW rectifier substations, and one super capacitor energy storage substation. Elcon is also responsible for the traction electrification preliminary design for the Ruby O&M Yard and Shop expansions to accommodate additional light rail vehicles required for the Milwaukie extension. Elcon also provides conceptual track, pedestrian, and navigational lighting design for the Willamette transit bridge.
