Fourth Street Bridge Retrofit
San Francisco, CA

The 86-year-old bascule bridge, designed by Joseph Strauss of Golden Gate Bridge fame are going through a major overhaul and seismic retrofit, including installation of new rails and overhead contact wires for light rail operations with provisions for future electric trolley buses. The movable span of this bridge is a single leaf one. The counterweight was made of concrete block.

ELCON is responsible for the design of electrical modifications to the existing bridge to meet current codes and regulations. Electrical design includes replacement of existing wound rotor motors with squirrel cage motors, a modern drive control system, installation of a new PLC based control system and PA and CCTV systems.  We are also responsible for designing the OCS system for light rail operation with provisions for future trolley buses and for providing structural calculations and supports for three portals to support OCS wires.
